2025 Kensington fiberized Slurry Seal and Overlays

Project Overview

The work to be done generally consists of placing two types of surface treatments on various roads in Kensington area: a type II fiberized slurry seal, or cold plane and overlay with hot mix asphalt (HMA), Including Clark Road in El Sobrante. Work will involve surface preparation, including weed spray, crack sealing, pavement failure repair, edge grinding, removal of existing thermoplastic stripes and pavement markings, removal of existing curb and sidewalk, and placing concrete curb ramps in compliance with the American with Disabilities Act, setting survey monuments, and placement of thermoplastic striping and pavement markings.

🚧 Road Work Update – Slurry Seal Project Nearing Completion 🚧

Heads up, Kensington! The slurry seal phase of the road improvement project is wrapping up this week. Final work will take place Thursday 10/2 and Friday 10/3 on Beloit, Trinity, and Kenyon streets.

✅ One-way traffic access will be maintained to ensure connectivity between Grizzly Peak Blvd, Arlington Ave, and the elementary school.

👷 Crews will also be performing touch-ups throughout Kensington, which may cause minor, mobile disruptions.

🏫 If you're dropping off or picking up kids at the elementary school, please plan ahead—school staff have been notified to help keep things smooth.

🧹 After slurry work is done, expect street sweeping to clear leftover materials. Final striping will begin next week with minimal traffic impact.

Thanks for your patience and support as we improve our roads!

📍 See the attached map for affected areas.

🚧 Kensington Road Work Update: Slurry Seal Schedule (Sept. 19–24, 2025)

The county is nearing the final stages of the 2025 Kensington Fiberized Slurry Seal and Overlays Project, and we appreciate your continued patience and support.

📅 Updated Work Schedule

Contra Costa County Public Works subcontractors will be performing slurry seal operations from Friday, September 19 through Wednesday, September 24. This includes previously scheduled areas and streets that were missed earlier in the project. These will be addressed on Tuesday and Wednesday, September 23–24.

🚗 Traffic Advisory for Arlington Avenue – Monday, September 22

  • Slurry seal work is scheduled for Arlington Avenue on Monday, September 22.
  • Expect one-way traffic control, similar to the setup during paving operations in August.
  • Slurry seal cures faster than asphalt, so closures will be shorter and less disruptive.
  • Traffic control crews will be on-site to manage flow and minimize delays, but some traffic impacts are unavoidable.

🧹 Cleanup & Rework

  • Crews will revisit previously sealed areas early next week to:
    • Address spots missed due to parked vehicles.
    • Clean up any excess slurry in curb and gutter sections.

🏫 Coordination with Kensington Hilltop Elementary

We’ve shared the updated schedule and map with the school administration to ensure minimal disruption to students and staff.

A schedule lists street names, directions, and areas in yards for each day from 9/19/2025 to 9/24/2025, with daily totals.

9/12/25

  • Project Stage: The project has entered the slurry seal stage, which is the second-to-last major phase. The final phase will involve signage and striping.
  • Schedule:
    • Slurry seal work is scheduled for September 15–19.
    • Arlington Avenue is scheduled for slurry seal work during the week of September 22. This will involve 1-way traffic control, similar to what was done the week of August 11.
  • Street Closures:
    • Slurry seal work requires complete street closures for certain periods before traffic can resume.
    • This is different from crack seal work, which typically allows more traffic flexibility.
  • School Coordination:
    • Work near Kensington Hilltop Elementary School will be limited to ensure continuous access for parents and teachers during drop-off and pick-up times.

This essential work is being performed to seal and strengthen Kensington’s roadways, especially ahead of the wet season when water infiltration can compromise the structural integrity of our roads and surrounding land.

- Please plan alternate routes during this time. Traffic mitigation measures are being evaluated to reduce delays and improve flow for all motorists.
- We ask for your patience and cooperation with road crews working diligently to improve our community’s infrastructure.
- Stay Updated: The Kensington Police Department will post weekly updates on construction locations to Nixle.
